How to Clean Chrome Bathroom Fittings

Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a 100% chrome fitting. Instead, chrome-based products merely exhibit a chrome finish. Chrome bathroom taps, car rims, appliances and other products are all made from an alternative material which has simply been covered with a thin layer of chrome.

Despite this thin layer, chrome is actually a very easy material to clean, and there is no need to resort to harsh cleaning chemicals.

While chrome exhibits a naturally bright sheen, it does have the disadvantage of looking unsightly when even small amounts of dirt and grime build up on it. With this in mind, the best way to keep your chrome items sparkling is to regularly clean them.

A damp cloth dipped in soapy water is usually sufficient to clean even the most grime-stained chrome tap or fitting. A microfibre clothcan be used to buff the surface once cleaned to help improve lustre.

Cleaning Chrome

  1. Wipe the chrome with a soapy cleaning cloth dipped in mild soapy water, then rinse with water – repeat as necessary. IMPORTANT – never use harsh cleaning solutions on chrome – these products will scratch the finish and damage the metal’s lustre. Ensure that you thoroughly rinse all soapy residue away or you risk tarnishing the metal.
  2. Use a toothbrush for any hard to reach areas and crevices. Remember to rinse the area of any residue afterwards to prevent tarnishing.
  3. For particularly dirty and/or stained chrome fixtures and fittings, apply a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water instead of the soapy water mixture. After applying the solution, wipe it clean using a damp cloth.
  4. Using a dry microfibre cloth, dry the chrome after you’re finished cleaning by moving the cloth in small circles across the surface (this avoids smudging). Microfibre cloths have the added benefit of buffing the surface, producing a far greater lustre in your chrome.
  5. If desired, apply a chrome polish to the cleaned surface and buff using a microfibre cloth.
