How to Polish Brass

how-to-polish-brass

Cheery, homey, humble – there are many words to describe brass. This popular metal is the ideal choice for making a home exude a warm, welcoming charm, but it is notoriously hard to keep its lustre from fading over time, and the metal can all too easily tarnish if  due care is not taken when attempting to polish it.

Over time, brass will collect plenty of grime and dust. This is relatively easy to remove – a simple solution of standard brass cleaner will usually do the trick, as well as plenty of vigorous cleaning using a microfibre cloth.

To polish your brass you will need:

  1. Brass cleaner
  2. 2 x microfibre cloths
  3. 2 x standard cleaning cloths

Polishing Brass Effectively

  1. Evenly apply the brass cleaner to the item. With a microfibre cloth, rub the surface in circular motions. This will buff the brass cleaner into the surface and create a layer from which you can begin the rest of the polishing. Fold the cloth into smaller squares as you continue to buff the polish into the item, allowing you to focus your efforts into smaller areas. The dried-on cleaner will remain crusty but you should be able to rub it into the brass’ surface. Continue until the first layer of brass cleaner has been evenly rubbed into the item.
  2. Once the first layer of brass cleaner appears to have been completely rubbed in, fold the cloth so that it exposes a fresh, unused section of cloth. Then, with circular motions, buff the brass until you create an even shine and the brass cleaner has been completely removed.
  3. Using a toothbrush, work your way into any cracks and crevices the item may have. Rub the area using a small corner of a microfibre cloth until it begins to shine.
  4. Add a drop of washing up liquid to a small cup of warm water. Dampen a cleaning cloth into the solution, ensuring to wring any excess water out of the cloth. Rub the cloth over the item to remove the rest of the cleaner.
  5. Rinse the cloth thoroughly with fresh water and wipe the soap from the surface of the brass. Using a separate cloth, pat the item dry and then polish with a separate microfibre cloth. Repeat step 5 as necessary.
