Eco-friendly cleaning tips

While recycling is one of the easiest ways of being more eco-friendly around the home, another simple way of having a more green home is through eco-friendly cleaning. A lot of cleaning products have harsh chemicals that are not only bad for our health and skin, but are also bad for the environment. Fortunately, there are lots of ways to keep your home spotlessly clean while not damaging your health or the environment in the process.

Here are some of our eco-friendly cleaning tips:

Make your own cleaning products

There are lots of recipes online telling you how to make your own cleaning products from everyday items you’ll find around the kitchen, such as baking soda and lemon juice. These are often easy to make and just as effective, if not more so, than using traditional shop bought cleaning products. As well as this, making your own cleaning products is normally more cost-effective than buying expensive cleaning products.

Buy natural cleaning products

If you don’t have the time or inclination to make your own cleaning products, there are lots of eco-friendly cleaning products available to buy now. Many of these are available to buy in supermarkets and shops, alternatively there are websites that enable you to purchase eco-friendly cleaning products online. When buying cleaning products claiming to be green it is a good idea to check the ingredients list to make sure no harsh chemicals are being put into them without you knowing.

Use recycled cleaning cloths

Throw away cleaning cloths can be harmful to the environment as they usually end up in landfill sites and can take decades to erode. Buying recycled cleaning cloths is a great alternative to normal disposable cleaning cloths, as by washing them they can be used again and again and therefore continue to be recycled and be eco-friendly.

Use essential oils instead of air fresheners

Air fresheners are often full of chemicals that are not only toxic to the environment, but also can be bad for your health. There are many natural alternatives to using air fresheners to keep your home smelling fresh and clean. For example adding a few drops of essence oils onto cotton wool and leaving these in a room (out of reach from children and pets) will provide a natural and subtle scent.

These are our top eco-friendly cleaning tips, but we would love to hear from you if you have any more tips.
